About Fern Group
Fern Group is run by a qualified builder and mechanical engineer with 10 years on industrial, commercial, residential and hazardous sites.
Our founder and operations manager Shaye Deed holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering from Auckland University of Technology, and the New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4) through BCITO. He also holds NZQA Unit Standard 19359, Identify, inspect and maintain height safety equipment. Over the last 10 years he has worked on numerous industrial, residential, commercial and hazardous sites, managing different operations. What began as a small project in 2020 has scaled into the operation that Fern Group is today.
Shaye understands from his own practical experience the way large sites run, what’s needed and how to make it happen in a timely, efficient and — most importantly — safe manner. When you hire Fern Group, you are hiring a reputable company that truly cares about building long-lasting relationships to cater to your safety and maintenance needs.
What we do
We inspect, test and tag safety equipment on your own site, anywhere in Auckland. Nothing is couriered away, and nothing sits in a box at a workshop waiting its turn.
- Harnesses, lanyards, inertia reels and connectors
- Temporary anchor points
- Ladders and portable scaffold
- Emergency eyewash stations and showers
- Spill kits
We supply and repair the same gear as well, so when an item fails it can be fixed or replaced without you chasing a second supplier.
How we work
On your site, in one visit
Gear is inspected where it lives and tagged on the spot, so your crew can see at a glance what is in date. Nothing leaves your control and nobody loses a day waiting for kit to come back.
Recorded, with your own login
Every item goes into an online asset register that you have your own login to. You can see the last inspection, the next due date and the certificates whenever you want, and we send you the reports after every visit.
Every price we charge is published on our website with the inspection interval next to it, which is not something you will find on many inspectors' sites. Your first site visit is free, along with your first 10 PPE inspections and setting up your register.
The standards we work to
Height safety equipment is inspected to AS/NZS 1891.4:2025, the New Zealand and Australian standard for the selection, use and maintenance of industrial fall-arrest systems. Emergency eyewash and shower equipment is checked against AS 4775:2007.
The work is led by a holder of NZQA Unit Standard 19359, Identify, inspect and maintain height safety equipment.
Fern Group is SiteWise prequalified. SiteWise is the contractor health and safety prequalification system run by Site Safe New Zealand, and it is the check a lot of main contractors run before they let anyone onto their site.
Our work is mostly gas, industrial and trade sites. Teams at BOC, Elgas and DryGutts use us.
Giving back
We donate to Brain Injury New Zealand
Falls at height are a leading cause of head injury — and the damage isn’t always something you can see.
Our founder came through a concussion in his early 20s that took two years and hundreds of appointments to recover from, and none of it was visible from the outside.
Invisible injuries are different. Whether it’s a concussion, depression or anxiety, they all need support, and they affect the family and friends around the person too. That’s why we donate to Brain Injury New Zealand.
