Ladders and portable scaffolds need to be stable, secure and fit for use. We inspect the parts that affect safe operation.

What we check

Structure and condition — rails, rungs, frames, platforms, braces and components checked for cracks, bends, distortion, excessive wear, corrosion or damage.
Stability and connections — feet, castors, base supports, hinges, locks, braces, couplers and connections checked for secure attachment and correct operation.
Platforms and access — steps, platforms, ladders and access points checked for secure installation, damage and safe access.
Fall protection — guardrails, midrails, toe boards, spreaders and other protective parts checked where they apply.
Labels and suitability — load ratings, warnings and manufacturer markings checked, and the equipment confirmed suitable for its use and set-up.
Overall safety — checked for contamination, chemical damage, unauthorised changes, missing parts or anything else that could make it unsafe.

How we do it

Each ladder or portable scaffold is physically inspected against a documented checklist. Any defects are recorded and reported to you, and unsafe equipment is identified for removal from service until it is repaired or replaced.

Portable ladder $70 + GST. Maintenance platform $95. Mobile scaffold up to 2 m $150. Scaffold extension $120. Inspected every 6 months.

Common questions about ladder and scaffold inspection

How often should ladders be inspected in New Zealand?

A competent person should inspect a ladder on a set interval and record it, and the user should check it before every use. We tag each ladder with the date it was inspected and the date it is next due, so nobody has to remember. We inspect ladders, maintenance platforms and mobile scaffold every six months.

What does the ladder tag mean?

A tag on a ladder shows it has been inspected, when, and when it is next due. If a ladder has no tag or an out-of-date tag, a site supervisor or an auditor will treat it as not fit for use.

What happens to a ladder that fails?

It is tagged out of service on the spot and recorded in your asset register so it cannot quietly go back on the truck. We tell you whether it can be repaired or needs replacing, and we can do either.
